| Trivia Tidbits: Following the breakup, the only album to feature all four Beatles (although not on the same song) was Ringo, a 1973 Ringo Starr solo album. In 1963, The Beatles gave their song publishing rights to Northern Songs. Northern Songs sold the rights to British TV company, Associated TeleVision (ATV). In 1985, ATV’s music catalogue was sold to Michael Jackson for a reported $47 million (beating Paul McCartney’s bid), including the publishing rights to over 200 Beatles songs. A decade later Jackson and Sony merged their music publishing businesses. Since 1995, Jackson and Sony/ATV Music Publishing have jointly owned most of The Beatles’ songs. Sony later reported that Jackson had used his share of their co-owned Beatles’ catalogue as collateral for a loan from the music company. McCartney later succeeded in personally acquiring the publishing rights to "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "P.S. I Love You" and "Ask Me Why". George Harrison created Harrisongs which still owns the rights to his songs such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something". Ringo Starr also created his own company, called Startling Music. It holds the rights to his two Beatle-composed songs, "Don’t Pass Me By" and "Octopus’s Garden". When asked once in an interview during the 1960s how he expected to die, John Lennon’s offhand answer was "I’ll probably be popped off by some loony." At 10:50 p.m. on December 8, 1980, Mark David Chapman shot and fatally wounded John Lennon in front of Lennon’s residence, the Dakota, when Lennon and Yoko Ono returned from recording Ono’s single "Walking on Thin Ice" for their next album. Chapman was given 20 years to life for second degree murder and remains in prison today. On November 29, 2001, George Harrison died from what was ascribed to lung cancer that had metastasised to the brain. He died in a location provided to him by Paul McCartney. Both the location and the provider were kept a mystery to media and the public at the time, allowing Harrison to die in peace. |
